Your Gift to Future Audiences
Supporting the Edinburgh International Festival in your will.
As a charity we rely heavily on the generosity of our supporters to enable this world-class cultural event to take place each year. For some, the best way to make a contribution is by leaving a gift in their will, and these gifts are ever increasingly vital in helping to safeguard the International Festival’s future.
By having a valid and up to date will in place you can ensure that your nearest and dearest are provided for, as well as helping the causes that are close to your heart. Help make a difference to tomorrow’s audiences by pledging your support to Edinburgh International Festival today. Further information is available below or by downloading a copy of our legacy information sheet.
How your gift will be used
Gifts received can either go towards the core programming costs of the International Festival, can be dedicated to supporting a particular artist or company attending the International Festival, or your gift could be invested in our Endowment Fund, which provides a major source of funding for special projects at the International Festival. Every gift, no matter how large or small, will make a difference to the future of the International Festival.
If you are considering leaving a gift in your will to the Edinburgh International Festival, please consider how you wish your gift to be used:
Edinburgh International Festival Society
If you would like the International Festival to use your gift within the first year or two following its receipt please instruct your solicitor to dedicate funds directly to the Edinburgh International Festival Society. Gifts made to the Festival Society can either help us cover the Festival’s core programming costs or alternatively you may wish to dedicate your support towards a particular area of the Festival’s programme that you are passionate about you. We ask that you contact us so that we can help ensure your gift will be allocated as you wish. (Scottish Charity no. SC004694)
Edinburgh International Festival Endowment Fund
If you would prefer to make a gift for perpetuity, then you should instruct that your will should deposit funds with the Edinburgh International Festival Endowment Fund. The Edinburgh International Festival Endowment Fund is a major source of funding for the Festival, and contributions to the Fund help secure the future of the Festival for years to come. The Endowment Fund was set up in 1989 with the vision to create a stable and long-term source of funding for the Festival. The objective was to create a capital fund, the income from which could be applied by the Trustees to support Festival Directors into the future to present special projects, including new and less familiar work, which it might not otherwise be possible to programme. (Scottish Charity no. SC004511)
Types of legacy
Below you can find out more information about the different types of legacy available to you when writing your will.
A residual legacy is a gift of the remainder of your estate, or a percentage of the remainder, after all other gifts and costs have been made. Even a small percentage of the residue could benefit the Festival: residuary legacies keep up with inflation and can help your gift go further as the value of your estate increases, so too does your gift. For these reasons, residual gifts are particularly appreciated.
A pecuniary legacy is a specific sum of money left to the Festival. Please remember the impact that inflation may have on the value of this gift.
A specific legacy is an item, for example your home, or stocks and shares.
Revisionary legacy / Life interest
A revisionary legacy / life interest – you can choose to leave a gift to family and friends during their lifetime. Upon their death the legacy would then be reverted to someone else or to a charity.
A conditional legacy would name the Festival as a beneficiary should any or all of your other named beneficiaries die before you.
When including a gift to the International Festival in your will, as well as including the charity number and name, please also include the International Festival’s registered address: Edinburgh International Festival, The Hub, Castlehill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NE.
Using a Codicil
If you already have a will and wish to add a gift to the International Festival, this can be done using a codicil. A codicil need not change the terms of your current will, it can simply add a new instruction. Please make sure you store the codicil with your original will.
